Synchronization of Organ Pipes

چکیده

We report results on the synchronization of an organ pipe either by a second pipe or by a loudspeaker, positioned side by side. Classical theory suggests oscillation death for the synchronization of two organ pipes. With our measurements we clearly exclude this scenario. Rather, we identify the aeroacoustical coupling by the oscillating wind sheet at the pipe mouth as the source of a self-regulation of the phase of the organ relative to the driving source. In the case of two almost identical coupled organ pipes, the oscillation is antiphase such that they silence each other, in the case of a loudspeaker driving the organ pipe, an in-phase movement is observed at the edge of the synchronization region, which yields a much louder sound of the coupled system at the frequency of the loudspeaker. This is a way to stabilize an acoustical sound source by a minute signal the loudspeaker can be up to 30 dB weaker than the organ pipe, but still forces the instrument to follow it.

Synchronization of organ pipes: experimental observations and modeling.

We report measurements on the synchronization properties of organ pipes. First, we investigate influence of an external acoustical signal from a loudspeaker on the sound of an organ pipe. Second, the mutual influence of two pipes with different pitch is analyzed. In analogy to the externally driven, or mutually coupled self-sustained oscillators, one observes a frequency locking, which can be e...

Synchronization of sound sources.

Sound generation and interaction are highly complex, nonlinear, and self-organized. Nearly 150 years ago Rayleigh raised the following problem: two nearby organ pipes of different fundamental frequencies sound together almost inaudibly with identical pitch. This effect is now understood qualitatively by modern synchronization theory M. Abel et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 119, 2467 (2006)10.1121/1....

On the acoustical quality of free-reed organ pipes

Free-reed organ pipes were introduced at the end of the 18 century and soon became popular across Europe, especially in Germany and Switzerland. As opposed to striking-reed pipes (boundor beating-reed pipes) the reed in free-reed pipes does not beat against the shallot, an orifice in the reed, when it is played. Instead it swings freely through a perforated rectangular plate of brass, like in r...

Impact of the Synchronization of portulaca oleracea and Aerobic Training on Levels of MMP2 and MMP9 and TIMP1 in Diabetic Women Type II

Background: Diabetes has the most important role in development of tissue damage, and by affecting intercellular matrices, may lead to structural and functional changes that ultimately cause failure of related tissue or organ. Exercise and herbal medicine can be effective in reducing organ failure. This study aims to assess the effect of aerobic training combined with consumption of portulaca o...

Determination of organ pipes’ acoustic parameters by means of numerical techniques

The sound generation of an organ pipe is a very complex physical process, since the acoustical phenomena take place coupled with fluid flow effects. Even so, by modeling the organ pipe merely as an acoustic resonator, one can predict several key parameters of the sounding with sufficient accuracy. The aim of this article is to examine the simulation techniques that can be used for organ pipe mo...
